The Book of Daniel  is an apocalypse, like the Book of Revelation in the New Testament, is an apocalypse; an unveiling. Other apocalypse writings in scripture are:

Verse 1

Jehoiakim was an evil king who ruled 11 years beginning in 609 B.C.  After ruling 3 years, Nebuchadnezzar captured Jerusalem and made Jehoiachin a vassal for 8 years before finally killing Jehoiakim.

Verse 2

SHINAR:

Also Babylonish (Joshua 7:21)

According to biblical tradition, the land of Nimrod, including Babel, Erech, Accad, and “Calneh”.

The House Of His God:

His god was known as Bel, also known as Marduk, the chief god of the Babylonian pantheon.

Bel had the head and neck of a serpent, the body of a lion and the hind feet were eagle's talons. Obviously man was not made in his image.

Verse 3

Ashpenaz:

Lit., “nose of a horse”

Because Aspenaz was the chief or prince of the eunuchs, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah were all castrated.

This is made clear in this verse, as well as in verse 4 (see note), in Isaiah 39:7 and in Josephus, page 222.

The King's Seed:

The King was Zedekiah

Verse 4

No Blemish:

No blemish of body.

Well Favored:

Beautifully formed and featured.

Skillful In All Wisdom:

Disciplined by the application of wisdom.

Gifted In Knowledge:

Knowledgeable in many key areas.

Understanding Science:

Actually they did not understand science yet. They simply had an aptitude for science making it easier for them to learn science.

Such As Had Ability In Them To Stand In The King's Palace:

A Eunuch;Guards in bedchambers of females eunuch was ideally suited to stand guard in the bedchambers of females. Because Daniel, Hanahiah, Mishael and Azariah had been castrated, they were used to “stand guard” in the king's palace.

Verse 5

Appointed:

Assigned

Verse 6

Daniel:

  • God's judge

Hananiah:

  • The Lord is gracious

Mishael:

  • Who is what the Lord is

Azariah:

  • The Lord is my help

Verse 7

Unto Whom The Prince Of The Eunuchs Gave Names:

The brain washing begins.

They were not given just any name, they were given a Babylonian counterpart to their Hebrew names.

  • Daniel's name is changed to Belteshazzar, which means: Bel's Prince.

  • Hananiah's name was changed to Shadrach, which means: Illumined by the sun god.

  • Mishael's name was changed to Meshach, which means: Who is as Ishtar is.

  • Azariah's name was changed to Abednego, which means: Slave of Nabu (the god of wisdom).

Verse 8

The Portion Of The King's Food:

The king's food included unclean beasts and beasts previously sacrificed to the gods of Babylon.

  • Although Daniel had already decided that he would not eat, he was not going to be rude by flatly refusing to eat the food that was genuinely meant as a royal kindness. Instead, Daniel mildly and modestly requested of the proper officers to indulge him in this matter.

Verse 9

God Brought Daniel Into Favor:

The impact which we think we make for ourselves we must acknowledge to be God's gift.

We must give God the glory for it.

Verse 12

Ten Days:

Ten is the number of testing and trial in scripture.

Genesis 31:7; Numbers 14:22; Nehemiah 4:12; Job 19:3 to note a few.

Pulse:

The word zeriom denotes all leguminous plants, which are not reaped, but pulled or plucked.

Verse 17

God Gave Them Knowledge And Skill:

Although they applied themselves most diligently to learning, and doubtless their tutors, finding them of uncommon capacity, took a great deal of pains with them, but, in the end, all of their achievements are ascribed to God only.

It was God who gave them, “...knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom; for every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights.”

There are two reasons that spring to mind with regard to the favor God show these four young men:

  • A balance for their losses. They were being deprived of the honors and pleasures of their noble positions.

  • A recompense for their integrity. They would not defile themselves with the king's meat or his wine. They became, in effect, Nazarites.

Verse 21

Daniel Continued:

Daniel lived to see the return of his people from Babylonian captivity, though he did not die then.
