Fruits

Although it hardly need be stated, there are only two types of fruit:

  • Fruits of sin.
  • Fruits of righteousness.

Fruits of Sin

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21

Adultery

Adultery is realized in two forms:

  • Physical adultery

Having sex with a married person of the opposite sex who is not your spouse.

  • Spiritual adultery

Idolatry

  • 2 Peter 2:14
  • Proverbs 6:32

Fornication

All other sexual impurities.

  • 1 Corinthians 6:18
  • Ephesians 5:3

Not even mentioned

Uncleanness

Uncleanness is impurity whether physical or moral.

  • Ephesians 5:3

ALL uncleanness

Lasciviousness

Sensual desires which are lacking restraint.

Idolatry

False gods.

The two things most likely to be placed in the idolatry realm are:

Money

  • Deuteronomy 7:25

Men

  • Acts 12:21-23

Other contenders for idolatry are:

Self

Sex

Drugs

Tobacco

Music

Fishing

Golf

Knitting

Cooking

  • Anything that you turn to for comfort, strength, help, confidence, or support is an idol.

Witchcraft

There is no differentiation between good and bad, or between black and white witches.

Witches are diviners and their practices are independent of, and contrary to God.

  • 1 Samuel 15:23

Hatred

Just as fear is the opposite of faith, hatred is the opposite of love.

  • 1 John 4:8

One who hates is opposed to God.

Variance

Discord. A provoking. Contention.

  • Romans 16:17

Emulations

Unless you research this word, you will be left standing in the shadows wondering what is being spoken of.

Emulation is jealousy.

  • Proverbs 6:34

Wrath

The basic idea of wrath is to breathe hard from anger. Wrath goes way beyond anger to the point where you are caught up by it and are now controlled by wrath.

  • James 1:19, 20
  • Proverbs 30:33

Strife

Strife is quite simply the stimulation of anger and contention.

The generator of strife may not even participate in it.

  • Proverbs 15:18
  • Proverbs 25:8
  • Proverbs 26:20
  • Romans 2:8, 9

Seditions

Divisions and disunity.

  • 1 Corinthians 12:12-27

These verses speak of unity.

Heresies

Principles, opinions, doctrines, and practices that are untrue.

  • Romans 16:17, 18

Envyings

Many people believe that envy and jealousy are synonyms. The dictionary even lists them as synonyms. However, envy is much more aggressive than jealousy.

Envy stems from feelings of resentment over another person’s superior attainments, endowments, or possessions.

Envy goes beyond the desire to possess the goods of another (jealousy). Envy seeks to take from the individual that which he has.

  • Ephesians 5:3-5

Murderers

The plain language of scripture is, “Thou shalt do no murder.”

Drunkenness

Excess of alcohol.

  • Proverbs 23:29-33

This is a Biblical principle.

Revellings

Riotings
